This report presents findings from a nationwide monitoring exercise grounded in the use of the tool “The Right to Defend Rights”. This tool applies a set of human rights indicators to systematically assess the extent to which Kenya provides a favorable and safe environment for human rights defenders (HRDs). The initiative was led by the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) in collaboration with civil society organizations, state actors, and independent institutions mandated to safeguard civic space and fundamental freedoms. The KNCHR had been part of the reference group that participated in the development of the tool and thus became among the institutions to pilot the tool.
