The nature of the work of a human rights defender demands a lot of confidence and courage. For some, the confidence comes naturally. Yet for others it must be nurtured.

Human Rights Defenders in different parts of the Country play a very crucial role in enhancing the realization of human rights. However, this role is hampered by several challenges and one of them is the capacity gaps that exists within the HRDs themselves.

The relationship between Human Rights Defenders and Security has not been a cordial one for the longest time possible not just in Kenya but in most countries of the world.

The Media are human rights defenders by the virtue of the work that they engage in on a daily basis. The media plays a very important role in ensuring that HRDs work in a safe environment, for instance by exposing violators of the rights of HRDs.

“The duty of our generation is to be in solidarity with the weak, the persecuted, the lonely, the sick and those in despair. It is expressed by the desire to give a noble and humanizing meaning to community in which all members define themselves not by their identity but by that of others.”

The EU implemented project in the three counties of Kwale, Marsabit and Busia places very high premiums on the integral role played by the public in supporting the working of Human Rights Defenders.
