Agenda V- Interactive Live Show |
|
Over the past couple of weeks KNCHR has been engaged in a live broadcasting of public debates with the sole aim of raising the Agenda IV issues to the fore. During the National Dialogue and Reconciliation talks of 2008 between PNU and ODM, it was agreed that there was a need to institute fundamental reforms in all spheres of our society in order to prevent a re-occurence of the post election violence. The issues which were singled out were constitutional, land reforms, tribalism, youth unemployment and accountability and transparency in government operations. KNCHR will provide the platform through which the common man can discuss these issues and see how they are pegged in the proposed draft constitution. Indeed it was pertinent to see how the draft will address endemic problems like poverty and inequality and how it shall improve the social welfare of the common man. In order for this to be achieved it was decided that a live interactive show would best provide the neccessary ground for this particular objective to be achieved. So far the program which was appropriately dubbed Agenda V, as a way of continuity from the Agenda IV item, has given kenyans a chance to debate on issues and have the draft explained to them. During the shows, some of the problems which have commonly been adressed are bad governance, impunity, corruption and tribalism. in Garissa for example it was heart wrenching to hear residents of North Eastern provincce discuss the Wagalla massacres in which government security agencies were accused if killing, torturing and abusing people in the area. In Kakamega cases of under-development and marginalisation came to the fore while in Kisumu whcih bore the brunt of police brutality during the election violence, it was sad hearing cases of police excesses. |
