BACKGROUND

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (Commission) is an independent National Human Rights Institution established by the Government through the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act No. 9 of 2002.  The Commission is mandated by the Act to inform and educate, among other things, to inform and educate on human rights for the purpose of enhancing respect for such rights.

The Commission intends to conduct a sensitization campaign on the Proposed Constitution. The Commission will use live interactive television and radio shows to sensitize the public on the provisions of the Proposed Constitution. The interactive shows will be conducted in various regions around the country, particularly in Embu, Nyeri, Kisumu, Kakamega, Mombasa, Nairobi, Eldoret, Nakuru, Garissa and will require proper coordination and administrative input.

The Commission therefore intends to recruit a Project Coordinator to offer coordinative, logistical and administrative support for the project and four Research Assistants to offer programmatic support for the project herein. Both positions will be required to undertake extensive field travel for the duration of the assignment.

PROJECT COORDINATOR, 1 POSITION
The position will provide research support to the Reforms and Accountability Programme undertaking public education on the Proposed Constitution and will in particular conduct research and background assessment on regional issues in the democracy and governance sector to support live interactive shows on Agenda IV.

QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:

  • A first degree in Anthropology from a recognized University is preferred. A degree in any other relevant social science may be accepted.
  • Masters in Law or Arts is an added advantage is an added advantage.
  • 5 year’s experience in administrative and logistical work
  • Demonstrable experience in report writing and presentation
  • Demonstrable research experience
  • Demonstrable experience in workshop facilitation

EXPECTATIONS
In executing her/ his duties, the candidate will be expected to do the following:
  • Coordinate the conduct of background assessment on regional issues in the democracy and governance sector by the research assistants
  • Coordinate the preparation of comprehensive research reports on democracy and governance issues emanating from or relating to the various regions in the country by the research assistants
  • Collate and analyse regional research reports with a view to informing the regional shows
  •  Coordinate the participation of civil society and citizens in the workshops and community forums in the 9 regions
  • Attend and assist in the facilitation of civil society workshops and community forums
  • Assist in planning and implementation of media and communication activities with a view of profiling regional governance and democracy issues
  •  Network with partners in the field
  • Work closely with KNCHR staff, particularly the responsible programme officer and the media consultant to ensure project objectives are met and there is coherence in the work undertaken herein
  • Assure the quality of the project outputs
  • Prepare comprehensive monthly reports and a summative report on the project
  • Adhere to timelines strictly

DURATION OF THE ENGAGEMENT
The position will be engaged by the Commission for a period of 4 months beginning on 1st June 2010.

REMUNERATION

The compensation for this assignment shall be Kshs. 70,000/- per month.


RESEARCH ASSISTANTS, 4 POSITIONS
The position will provide logistics research support to the Reforms and Accountability Programme undertaking public education on the Proposed Constitution and will in particular conduct research and background assessment on regional issues in the democracy and governance sector to support live interactive shows on Agenda IV.
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate must have the following minimum qualifications:

  •  A first degree in Anthropology from a recognized University is preferred. A degree in any other relevant social science may be accepted.
  •  3 year’s experience in solid academic social science research work
  • Demonstrable experience in report writing and presentation

SKILLS
  • Knowledge and understanding of key democracy and governance issues
  • Good organizational and analytical skills
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  •  Flexibility and adaptability
  •  Excellent computer skills
  • Good networking skills
  • Honesty and high level of integrity

  • Undertake field research and desktop research of legislation, policies, various research reports and publications
  • Network with partners in the field
  • Prepare comprehensive research reports on democracy and governance issues emanating from or relating to the various regions in the country.
  • Work closely with the project coordinator and KNCHR staff to ensure project objectives are met and there is coherence in the research undertaken
  • Adhere to deadlines

DURATION OF THE ENGAGEMENT

The position will be engaged by the Commission for a period of 3 months beginning on 1st June 2010.

REMUNERATION

The compensation for this assignment shall be Kshs. 45,000/- per month.
